“Was it… did I do okay?”
“More than okay,” Jake said, brushing strands of my hair back and staring deeply into my eyes. “God, Lacey, you’re perfect.”
I blushed. I was cuffed, chained to a bed, and I blushed like a little schoolgirl who’d just gotten her braids pulled by the boy she had a crush on.
If I hadn’t been tied, I would have put my arms around Jake’s neck, squirmed close to him. I suppose that’s part of why he’d tied me up.
He sat up at the edge of the bed. His spine curved in a slow line all the way to his neck. The planes of his back muscles tensed as he put his hands on his knees.
I couldn’t see his face, but then I remembered the mirror. Slowly, without shifting my weight, I bent my head back so I could see.
I saw myself, my hair a tangled mess, my arms to either side. My nipples were points against the darkness of the room. I saw the mussed sheets, the painted walls, the chains swinging slow arcs from the bedposts.
And I saw him.
His face contorted, and as he bent his head I saw—
No, no, I couldn’t have seen that, I must be seeing things—
I saw a tear roll down his cheek. He brushed it away quickly with his finger, wiped his hand on the sheet. Then he looked in the mirror.
A noise rose from his throat. A choked growl, like a wounded animal. He spun, his eyes wild.
After all of the crazy things he’d done to me, I thought that he would never be able to scare me again. But this—this look in his eyes, this vulnerable anger—this terrified me like nothing else.
I wanted to reach out to him, but my arms were tied. I wanted to speak his name—Jake—but it died on my lips. He hated his name and I had nothing else to call him.
“Please,” I said instead. “I’m sorry.”
I didn’t know what I was apologizing for, only that there was hurt in his face and I had been the one to hurt him, somehow.
He didn’t respond. He yanked the edge of the sheet from the bed and threw it over me. He was at the door of the room before he looked back at me. He was only a silhouette against the light of the hallway.
“Sleep,” he said finally. “I’ll be back later.”
With that, he turned off the lights and left me chained in the darkness.

I never meant to be here: tied up in bed next to a serial killer.
When I followed him home, I was just playing Nancy Drew. Trying to find out his secret. His kiss was intoxicating, and I thought he was harmless.
I was wrong.
Nancy Drew never ended up in a basement, handcuffed to a radiator, teased to the edge of insanity, begging to be let go.
Soon, I stopped begging to be let go.
Soon, I started begging to be HIS.
Author's Note: This is a dark romance novel with mature themes that might make some readers uncomfortable.
